Mini Guide to The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds is known for its rolling countryside, charming honey-stone villages, and historic landmarks, is one of England’s most picturesque destinations.

From must-visit attractions to the best eats and dreamy places to stay, consider this your Cotswolds cheat sheet.

Where to stay

I would recommend selecting one location as your base for your trip and then doing day trips to other parts of The Cotswolds. Here are a few of my favourite stays:

  • The Slaughters Manor House, Lower Slaughter – A luxurious boutique hotel set in a historic manor house.
  • The Manor House, Castle Combe – A luxurious country house hotel with stunning gardens and an 18-hole golf course.
  • The Swan Hotel, Bibury – A picturesque riverside hotel with elegant rooms and an amazing restaurant.
  • The Frogmill, Cheltenham – A beautifully restored boutique hotel offering a blend of rustic charm and modern luxury

Top Tip – The Sunday roast at the restaurant on site is a MUST.

  • The Fish Hotel, Broadway – A unique, stylish retreat set in woodland with luxurious lodges and a relaxed vibe.
  • The Pig at The Cotswolds, Cirencester – A chic country retreat focused on locally sourced food and cozy yet elegant interiors.

Things to do

You’re all settled in, now it’s time to explore! There’s so much to do and see in The Cotswolds, to make it easier I’ve broken it down into the key areas and villages to visit and things to do as well as the best places to eat!

Upper and Lower Slaughter

  • Visit the Old Mill in Lower Slaughter – A historic watermill with a museum and a the cutest tearoom
  • Walk the River Eye Trail – A scenic walk connecting the two villages, offering postcard-perfect views of traditional cottages and the gentle river.

Top Tip – Grab a coffee to go from the Old Mill in Lower Slaughter to enjoy on your walk!

  • Explore St. Mary’s Church – A beautiful medieval church with stunning stained glass windows.
  • The Slaughters Country Inn – Offering British Classics and comfort food as well as a great selection of local ales – perfect for a cosy pub lunch.
  • The Slaughters Manor House – A refined dining experience with seasonal British cuisine in an elegant setting.

Castle Combe

  • Wander the village streets – Castle Combe is often called England’s prettiest village, and a stroll through its historic center is a must!

Top Tip – Castle Combe can get quite busy, so make sure to head there early in the morning if you want to enjoy Castle Combe without the crowds.

  • Visit St. Andrew’s Church – A stunning medieval church home to one of England’s oldest working clocks.
  • Explore the Bybrook River – A tranquil spot perfect for a relaxing afternoon by the water.
  • The Castle Inn – A historic pub offering delicious local cuisine with a cozy atmosphere.
  • The Bybrook at The Manor House – A Michelin-starred restaurant serving exceptional seasonal dishes set in the stunning Manor House Hotel.

Bourton-on-the-Water

  • Explore the shops and cafés – Bourton-on-the-Water has the cutest selection of independent boutiques and charming cafés, perfect for a relaxing afternoon.
  • Visit the Cotswold Motoring Museum – A fascinating collection of vintage cars and memorabilia.
  • Walk along the River Windrush – Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the picturesque riverside.
  • Explore the Model Village – A miniature replica of the village, offering a unique perspective on its beauty.
  • The Dial House – A fine-dining restaurant with a menu inspired by seasonal, local ingredients.
  • Bakery on the Water – A delightful bakery known for its fresh pastries and excellent coffee.

Bibury

  • Visit Arlington Row – One of the most photographed streets in England, known for its charming 17th-century cottages.
  • Explore Bibury Trout Farm – A working trout farm where you can feed the fish and even catch your own.
  • Walk through the Coln Valley – A beautiful countryside walk offering spectacular views.
  • The Swan Hotel Restaurant – A refined dining experience with a focus on fresh, local ingredients.

Stow-on-the-Wold

  • Explore Market Square – A historic square surrounded by antique shops, boutiques, and cafes.
  • Browse the antiques fair on weekends – Stow-on-the-Wold is known for its antique, where you can find unique treasures and vintage finds. Make sure to check before hand to avoid disappointment.
  • Visit St. Edward’s Church – A beautiful church with a fairytale-like wooden door framed by ancient yew trees.
  • Shop at the Cotswold Cheese Company – A must-visit for cheese lovers looking to sample local delicacies.
  • The Old Butchers – A modern British restaurant with an ever-changing seasonal menu.
